Suspension Concentrate (SC) Formulations

Refers to a liquid formulation where micronized solid active ingredients are suspended in water using surfactants and dispersants. It’s widely used in agrochemicals like herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides, and is also known as a “flowable” formulation.

Key Features of SC Formulations:

  • Water-based: No flammable solvents, making it safer to handle and store.

  • Dust-free: Unlike powders, SCs eliminate airborne particles during application.

  • High concentration: Active ingredients are present in dense form, often 400–800 g/L.

  • Micronized particles: Typically <10 µm, allowing better coverage and absorption.

  • Stabilized with surfactants: Nonionic and anionic surfactants prevent sedimentation and improve dispersion.

Advantages:

  • Easy to dilute and apply

  • Compatible with most tank-mix adjuvants

  • Reduced phytotoxicity risk compared to EC or WP formulations

  • Environmentally safer due to absence of organic solvents

Common Components:

ComponentFunction
Active ingredientMain pesticidal or nutritional agent
Dispersing agentKeeps particles evenly suspended
Wetting agentImproves contact with surfaces
Thickener (e.g. xanthan gum)Prevents sedimentation during storage
Antifoam & preservativeEnhances usability and shelf life

SC formulations are ideal for low-solubility active ingredients that need to remain stable and effective in aqueous environments. They’re also increasingly used in foliar nutrition and seed treatments, offering precise delivery and reduced environmental impact.
